Η Maria Mimikou is Professor Emeritus at the School of Civil Engineering of NTUA. She has founded the Centre for Hydrology and Informatics (CHI) and served as Director of the Laboratory of Hydrology and Water Resources Management of NTUA (2003-2016) and Dean of the School of Civil Engineering of NTUA (2006-2009).
She has vast academic and research experience (over 40 years) in the areas of integrated water resources management, water resources systems planning and operation, urban, rural and coastal hydrology, stochastic hydrology, hydrologic and water quality modelling, soil erosion and sediment transport, climate change and land use change at the catchment scale, flood forecasting, risk assessment and mapping, as well as water scarcity and drought analysis. She has extensive experience in the management of research programs, as she has been coordinator, scientific responsible and administrator of many EU competitive research programs.
She has been involved in several consulting projects for DG Research and DG Environment (EU-level instruments on water reuse, Integrated Assessment of 2nd RBMPs, Supporting the evaluation of the UWWTD, etc.). She has been a senior consultant of EEA (European Topic Centre on Inland, Coastal and Marine Waters) on Water quantity data, accounts and indicators and resource efficiency. She has provided support to WFD CIS WG Data and Information Sharing and participated in the EU-WFD WGs. She has also served as a member of External Advisory Groups for DG Research. She is actively involved in the implementation of WFD and FD in Greece and has served as consultant for several Greek Ministries
Furthermore, she participates in European networks of water experts (EurAqua, JPI Water, WssTP, EXCIFF, etc.). She has established and served as scientific responsible for the development of the Greek Meteorological and Hydrological Database and of the Hydrological Observatory of Athens (HOA).
